Women Voters Outnumber Men in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry Polls: Election Commission of India Data

New Delhi: Women voters turned out in greater numbers than men across Assam, Kerala and Puducherry in the April 9 Assembly polls, according to gender-wise data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday.
This marks a continuation of a trend seen in the 2021 Assembly elections, where female participation had also surpassed male turnout in all three regions.
Puducherry Leads in Female Turnout
Among the three, Puducherry recorded the highest female turnout at 91.40%, compared to 88.13% among men, taking the overall turnout to 89.87% the highest since 2011.
Female participation in the Union Territory has shown a steady rise over the years, from 86.29% in 2011 to 85.44% in 2016 and 82.20% in 2021, consistently outpacing male turnout in each election.
Record Turnout in Assam
In Assam, female turnout stood at 86.50%, marginally higher than 85.33% for men, pushing the overall voter turnout to a record 85.91% in Assembly election history.
The state has witnessed a gradual rise in women’s participation from parity with men in 2016 (both at 84.67%) to women surpassing men in 2021 and continuing the trend this year.
Kerala Continues Trend
Kerala also recorded higher participation among women, with 81.19% turnout compared to 75.19% for men. The overall turnout in the state reached 78.27%, up from 76% in the previous Assembly elections.
Women voters in Kerala have consistently outnumbered men in recent elections, with female turnout at 78.14% in 2016 and 73.94% in 2021, both higher than male participation.
Electoral Roll Revision Impact
The rise in overall turnout across all three regions has also been attributed to revisions in electoral rolls. While Kerala and Puducherry underwent a Special Intensive Revision (SIR), Assam saw a special revision exercise, leading to a trimming of voter lists.
The latest data highlights a growing trend of higher political participation among women voters, reinforcing their expanding role in shaping electoral outcomes across the country.
