Travel Vlogger Jyoti Malhotra Arrested for Allegedly Spying for Pakistan

Mumbai: Jyoti Malhotra, a popular travel vlogger from Haryana known for her YouTube channel ‘Travel with Jo’ and Instagram account ‘travelwithjo1’, has been arrested for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistani intelligence agents. Malhotra, who enjoys a substantial following on social media with over 3,77,000 YouTube subscribers and 1,32,000 Instagram followers, is among seven individuals taken into custody in connection with the case.

According to officials, Malhotra first visited Pakistan in 2023, where she crossed the Attari-Wagah border and explored various destinations, including Lahore’s Anarkali Bazaar and the historic Katas Raj Temple. Her travelogues, featuring vibrant street scenes, cultural exchanges, and local cuisine, aimed to showcase a positive image of Pakistan, but investigators allege they were part of a broader propaganda effort.

Spy Network Allegations

Investigators claim that during her initial visit to Pakistan, Malhotra came into contact with Ehsan-ur-Rahim, alias Danish, an official from the Pakistan High Commission (PHC) in New Delhi. Rahim, who was recently expelled by India on May 13, 2025, after being declared persona non grata, reportedly introduced Malhotra to Pakistani intelligence operatives. These connections, authorities allege, drew her into a larger espionage network operating across Haryana and Punjab.

Encrypted Communication and Coded Contacts

Upon returning to India, Malhotra is said to have maintained contact with these operatives using encrypted messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Snapchat. To avoid suspicion, she reportedly saved her handlers’ numbers under disguised names, including ‘Jatt Randhawa’. Investigators believe she provided sensitive information about Indian locations during these exchanges.

Intimate Connections and Multiple Visits

Sources indicate that Malhotra developed a close personal relationship with one of the Pakistani operatives, allegedly even traveling with him to Bali, Indonesia. Officials say she made a total of three trips to Pakistan, each time further deepening her ties with intelligence networks there.

Social Media Influence and Propaganda

Malhotra’s influence as a social media personality, coupled with her extensive travels to Pakistan, reportedly made her an appealing target for foreign agents. Her videos, which often highlighted cultural similarities and positive aspects of Pakistan, may have been leveraged as part of a broader effort to influence public perception in India.

Broader Implications

The arrest has sparked concerns over the potential misuse of social media influence for intelligence gathering and propaganda. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to probe deeper into the network, potentially leading to more arrests in the coming weeks.

The incident comes amid a period of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, with New Delhi recently downgrading diplomatic ties following the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead and triggered Operation Sindoor, a major anti-terror initiative.
