Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Accuses Centre of Withholding Education Funds Over Language Policy

Mumbai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday accused the BJP-led central government of withholding education funds to the state over its refusal to adopt the three-language policy. Speaking at a book release event, Stalin claimed that the Centre has blocked Rs 2,152 crore meant for the state’s educational development as part of what he described as “petty politics.”
“The BJP-led Centre has halted education funds to Tamil Nadu for its petty politics,” Stalin alleged, emphasizing that the state’s firm stance on the two-language policy has resulted in the withholding of critical financial support.
Stalin also announced that the Tamil Nadu government plans to approach the Supreme Court to challenge the Centre’s decision, expressing confidence that the state would prevail as it did in the recent Governor case, which set deadlines for the assent of bills.
Reaffirming his party’s long-standing demand, Stalin reiterated the need to shift education from the Concurrent List to the State List of the Constitution, arguing that this move would give states greater control over educational policies and funding.
“The struggle to bring education to the state list of the Constitution will continue. If this demand is not met, education will remain out of bounds for many,” he said, reflecting the DMK’s consistent stance on the matter.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre over linguistic and educational autonomy, further fueling a long-standing debate on federal powers in India.
