Shreyas Iyer Calls England Defeat a “Rough Patch,” Stresses Adaptability Ahead of Zimbabwe T20I Series
Mumbai: Newly appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has described India’s recent setbacks as a “rough patch” while emphasizing that the team has drawn several crucial lessons. The Men in Blue are gearing up to face Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series starting July 23 at the Harare Sports Club.
Iyer’s tenure as short-format captain got off to a demanding start following a 2-0 series loss against Ireland and a 4-0 defeat in England. Despite those results, the Indian skipper expressed great enthusiasm for the upcoming tour in Harare. He noted that adjusting rapidly to local conditions and maintaining situational awareness will be vital for the team’s success.
Turning Setbacks Into Growth
Addressing the media during the pre-match press conference, Iyer highlighted that the team’s main takeaway from the UK tour is the need for quick adaptability on the field. Facing a brand-new set of conditions in Harare, he urged the younger players to adjust seamlessly to get positive outcomes.
“First and foremost, excited to be here. This is my first time in Zimbabwe and Harare. The weather looks beautiful, the people look happy. So, looking forward to an exciting series over here. And then, yes, definitely we had a rough patch in England but lots of positives out of that. We got to know what we have to build as a team going forward, what kind of presence of mind, awareness, and adaptability we need once we step onto the field. Again, this is going to be a great challenge for us. Some of us are playing for the first time, so the quicker we adapt, the better result we would be getting,” Iyer shared.
Respecting a Formidable Zimbabwe Lineup
The Indian captain refused to take the hosts lightly, acknowledging the quality within the Sikandar Raza-led Zimbabwean squad. Pointing out that several Zimbabwean players possess valuable experience from franchise leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL), Iyer emphasized that India’s sole objective is to deliver winning performances as a unit.
“I feel that they have an amazing team, an amazing lineup. And a couple of them also played in the IPL, so they carry immense experience and it is going to be a great series. Everyone wants to perform at the end of the day and see to it that their team wins. And that’s the reason we are here, to win,” he added.
Fostering Fearless Cricket and Team Unity
Heading into the series with a relatively inexperienced bowling unit, Iyer offered clear advice to the young squad members. He urged them to play without the fear of failure, disregard outside chatter, and keep their primary focus on team success over individual achievements.
“I feel that they shouldn’t have the fear of failure. Because whenever there are such thoughts at the back of your mind, then you just play to survive. When there isn’t the thought of fear of failure, then you can bring out the best from within yourself. So I have to convey this message that you shouldn’t think much about the talk happening outside… We have to stay in the present day. The better cricket we play, the more we play with team unity, the more the team will benefit from it. We’ll think about individuals later,” Iyer asserted.
