Parvathy Thiruvothu Recalls Traumatic Childhood Experiences, Speaks Out on Street Harassment and Safety

Mumbai: National Award-winning actor Parvathy Thiruvothu has once again used her voice to highlight uncomfortable truths about women’s safety, sharing deeply distressing memories from her childhood involving harassment by male strangers. Known for her outspoken stance on gender equality and consent, the actor spoke candidly about these experiences on The Male Feminist podcast, revealing how early such encounters began in her life.
During the conversation, Parvathy described multiple incidents that left a lasting impact on her as a child. Recalling one particularly painful moment, she said that harassment was something she encountered long before she could even comprehend it.
“We are born, and then we are assaulted. You’re getting into an auto and someone pinches you. At a railway station, when I was walking back with my father after leaving my mother, someone hit me on my chest and walked away. It wasn’t even a touch — it was a slap. I was a child and I remember being in pain,” she shared.
‘My Mother Had to Teach Me How to Stay Safe’
Parvathy explained how these repeated experiences shaped her understanding of the world at a very young age and forced her family to prepare her for public spaces in ways no child should have to endure.
“My mother taught me how to walk on the streets — don’t window shop, watch men’s hands,” she said. “Imagine a situation where a mother has to teach her child these things.”
She also spoke about repeated incidents of indecent exposure, recalling how confusing and disturbing those moments were at the time. “There were many instances of men flashing. I would turn around and see someone lifting their mundu and exposing himself. I didn’t even understand what was happening then. Only later do you realise how deeply these experiences affect your body and mind,” Parvathy added.
A Voice for Gender Safety and Consent
Parvathy has consistently used public platforms to speak about gender-based violence, consent, and systemic issues affecting women. Her latest remarks have resonated widely, sparking conversations around everyday harassment and the long-term psychological impact such experiences have on children.
Industry colleagues and fans have praised her courage for speaking openly about issues that are often brushed aside or normalised.
Career Highlights and Upcoming Project
Beyond her activism, Parvathy remains one of Indian cinema’s most respected performers, with acclaimed roles in films such as Take Off, Uyire, Qarib Qarib Single, Charlie, Maryan, and Bangalore Days.
On the professional front, the actor is set to appear in The Storm, a high-stakes thriller series for Prime Video. The project marks actor Hrithik Roshan’s first production under HRX Films.
