Pakistan to Play T20 World Cup 2026, Boycott Group Match Against India

Mumbai: In an unprecedented development, Pakistan has announced that it will participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 but will boycott its group-stage match against arch-rivals India.

The decision was taken by the Government of Pakistan following the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) move to remove Bangladesh from the tournament after Dhaka raised security concerns over playing in India.

Despite an earlier agreement between the ICC, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to stage all India–Pakistan matches at neutral venues, Pakistan has chosen not to take the field for the high-profile clash.

Notably, the Pakistani government did not specify the precise reason behind its decision to boycott the match.Earlier, the PCB had publicly shown solidarity with Bangladesh during an ICC vote on the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) request to shift its matches out of India due to security concerns.

Pakistan and Bangladesh were the only two nations to vote in favour of the request, while the remaining 14 member nations rejected it, stating that the concerns raised were not valid.

In an official statement posted on X, the Government of Pakistan said: “The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan Cricket Team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026. However, the Pakistan Cricket Team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February 2026 against India.”

The ICC is yet to issue an official response to the announcement. ICC sources told India Today that the global body had not received any formal communication regarding Pakistan’s decision.

The BCCI also confirmed that it has not been officially informed so far.If Pakistan maintains its stance, the decision could have significant sporting consequences.

Under ICC Playing Conditions, forfeiting a match results in a substantial hit to a team’s Net Run Rate (NRR), as the full quota of 20 overs is counted against the forfeiting side while calculating average runs per over.

Beyond sporting implications, the boycott could deal a major blow to the tournament’s commercial appeal. India–Pakistan matches are historically the biggest revenue drivers at ICC events, prompting the global body to place the two teams in the same group at every major tournament since 2012, despite strained diplomatic relations.

India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series in over 14 years. Should the boycott go ahead, the 2026 T20 World Cup would become the first men’s ICC tournament since 2010 without an India–Pakistan encounter.

Relations between the BCCI and PCB have remained tense in recent years. The standoff began with India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and intensified during the Asia Cup 2025, when Indian players declined to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts following the terror attack in Pahalgam.

Tensions escalated further after Bangladesh formally wrote to the ICC, citing security concerns and threatening not to travel to India.

Reports from Pakistan suggested that the PCB had offered to host Bangladesh’s matches and delayed confirming its own travel plans until February 1 as part of negotiations with the ICC and the BCCI.

With the ICC yet to respond officially, the situation remains fluid, and the final outcome could have far-reaching implications for the tournament.
