‘No Need to Answer Anyone’: Riyan Parag After 90 in Losing Cause

Mumbai: Riyan Parag produced his finest knock of the Indian Premier League 2026 season but was left disappointed as Rajasthan Royals suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Friday.

The Royals skipper struck a commanding 90 off 50 deliveries, marking a return to form amid mounting criticism. However, Parag made it clear after the match that individual performances mean little without a win.

“I don’t think I need to answer any critics or anyone talking about it. At the end of the day, my job is to get two points. My score doesn’t matter if we lose,” Parag said, addressing both his innings and the recent off-field controversy surrounding him.

The 24-year-old had come under scrutiny after being caught on camera using an e-cigarette during a previous match, an incident that resulted in a 25 per cent fine of his match fee and further discussions within the league.

Before this game, Parag had struggled for runs, managing just 117 in nine matches, which added to the pressure. But he responded with authority, anchoring Rajasthan’s innings and finding support from Donovan Ferreira, who smashed an unbeaten 47 off 14 balls to lift the Royals to 225/6.

Despite the imposing total, Delhi Capitals chased it down with composure. KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka led the successful pursuit, sealing victory with five balls to spare.

While the defeat extends Rajasthan’s inconsistent run, Parag’s innings offers a positive sign even if, as he insists, it ultimately counts for little without the two points.
