Nation Building Is Duty of Every Citizen: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat in Nagpur

Mumbai: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday emphasized that building and improving the nation is the collective duty of every Indian citizen, asserting that a strong and progressive India ultimately safeguards the interests of its people.
Speaking at a book release event in Nagpur, Bhagwat said, “To build our country and make it better is our duty, and in doing so we protect our own interests. A country that performs well is secure and respected across the world.”
RSS Founded on Spirit of Selfless Service
Tracing the roots of the RSS movement, Bhagwat said Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the founder of the organisation, chose Nagpur as the birthplace of the Sangh because the city already embodied a deep sense of selfless service, social awareness, and unity.
“Although there were people across the country who took pride in Hindutva and called for Hindu unity, an organisation like the RSS could only take shape in Nagpur,” Bhagwat noted. “The spirit of sacrifice and social commitment already present here helped Dr. Hedgewar start the Sangh.”
He clarified that while Nagpur holds a special emotional place for the RSS and its volunteers, the organisation works for the entire nation and Hindu society without seeking any exclusive status.
Invoking Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Vision
Drawing inspiration from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Bhagwat highlighted that the Maratha king’s pursuit of ‘Swarajya’ (self-rule) was not for personal gain but for the greater good of “God, religion, and the nation.”
“When Shivaji Maharaj began his mission for Swarajya, he gathered his companions not for himself but for a higher cause,” Bhagwat said. “His unity and leadership strengthened people’s confidence and inspired social progress.”
He added that Shivaji Maharaj’s ideals later inspired freedom fighters across India, including those who participated in the 1857 uprising, often referred to as India’s first war of independence.
Learning from History for a Stronger India
The RSS chief also cautioned against forgetting India’s rich heritage, saying that British colonial rulers deliberately tried to dismantle symbols that inspired unity and resistance among Indians.
“We must learn from our past — from how people struggled selflessly for society’s welfare,” Bhagwat said. “Our history has the strength to make India a land of peace, prosperity, and global contribution.”
RSS and the Vision of a United India
Underlining the RSS’s continued commitment to nation-building, Bhagwat reaffirmed that the Sangh’s mission remains focused on fostering unity, character-building, and patriotism among citizens.
As India moves forward on the global stage, Bhagwat’s message resonates with the Sangh’s broader philosophy — that true progress begins with selfless service and collective responsibility.
