Narendra Modi Apologises After Women’s Reservation Bill Fails in Lok Sabha, Slams Opposition

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed regret over the defeat of a Constitution Amendment Bill aimed at strengthening women’s reservation, apologising to women across the country and criticising opposition parties for blocking the legislation in the Lok Sabha.

In an address to the nation, Modi said the proposed amendment to the Nari Shakti Adhiniyam could not be passed despite the government’s efforts. “I apologise to the mothers and sisters of the country. Crores of women had their hopes pinned on Parliament, but we could not succeed in making the required amendments,” he said.

‘Nation’s Interest vs Party Politics’

The Prime Minister asserted that while the government prioritises national interest, some parties put political considerations first. “When party interest overtakes national interest, it is the country—and in this case, women who bear the consequences,” he remarked.

He alleged that opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Trinamool Congress, and Samajwadi Party, were responsible for the bill’s failure.

Strong Reaction to Voting Outcome

Modi also criticised what he described as celebratory reactions from opposition benches following the bill’s defeat. “It was painful to see applause when a proposal in the interest of women was rejected. Those were not just desk thumps, but a blow to the dignity and self-respect of women,” he said.

Voting Numbers and Legislative Impact

The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-first Amendment) Bill was put to vote in the Lok Sabha on Friday along with related proposals, including the Delimitation Bill and amendments concerning Union Territories.

During the division, 298 members voted in favour of the bill, while 230 voted against it—numbers that fell short of the required majority for a constitutional amendment.

Following the setback, the government indicated that it would not proceed with the two associated bills linked to the proposal.

Political Implications

The development marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over women’s political representation in India. The failure of the bill has intensified political exchanges between the ruling alliance and opposition parties, with both sides blaming each other for the outcome.

As discussions continue, the issue of women’s reservation remains a key point of contention in the country’s legislative and political landscape.
