Mumbai Shocker: Cop, 2 GRP Constables Sacked for Robbing Jewellery Trader in Uniform

Mumbai: In a serious case of alleged misconduct, an assistant police inspector and two constables from the Government Railway Police (GRP) have been dismissed from service for their involvement in the robbery of a jewellery merchant at Mumbai Central railway station.
The dismissed personnel Lalit Jagtap (assistant police inspector), Rahul Bhosale, and Anil Rathor (constables) were earlier suspended following the incident. The GRP issued dismissal orders against them on March 30, with immediate effect.
According to officials, the complainant, Kamalkumar Soni, a 37-year-old resident of Churu, was allegedly targeted at the station on August 10 last year. Soni had travelled to Mumbai with his daughter to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with his sister and was returning home on the day of the incident.
As per the complaint, Soni, along with his eight-year-old daughter and brother-in-law, was waiting for the Duronto Express at Platform No. 5 around 10:30 pm. A constable, reportedly without a nameplate, approached them and began checking Soni’s bag.
During the search, the constable allegedly found a 14-gram gold bar and ₹31,900 in cash. Despite Soni producing receipts for the gold, he was allegedly abused and physically assaulted in front of his young daughter.
The situation escalated when the constable called another accomplice, and the trio was taken to a dimly lit room near the platform. There, a third accused, posing as a senior officer, allegedly joined them. The three personnel reportedly subjected Soni to verbal abuse, physical assault, and threats of arrest, eventually forcing him to sign a blank document.
During the ordeal, Soni’s daughter was left traumatised and in tears.
As the train’s departure time approached, the accused allegedly seized the gold bar and the entire cash amount. Upon Soni pleading that he had no money left for the journey, the accused returned only ₹1,900 before letting the family leave.
Following an inquiry into the incident, the GRP took strict disciplinary action, culminating in the dismissal of all three personnel. The case has once again raised serious concerns over abuse of power and accountability within law enforcement agencies.
