Mithun Manhas Elected BCCI President, Becomes Third Successive Cricketer to Lead Board

Mumbai: Former domestic stalwart Mithun Manhas was on Sunday elected unopposed as the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during the board’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai. He succeeds Roger Binny, becoming the third consecutive cricketer—after Sourav Ganguly and Binny—to take charge of Indian cricket’s top administrative post.

Manhas, 45, who previously served as Director of Cricket for the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, now steps into a crucial leadership role overseeing the governance, performance, and growth of Indian cricket. His appointment follows a series of high-level discussions among board members on Saturday, where key posts in the BCCI’s new executive team were finalised.

New BCCI Office-Bearers

Alongside Manhas, several other office-bearers were elected:

  • Rajeev Shukla – Vice President
  • Devajit Saikia – Honorary Secretary
  • Prabhtej Singh Bhatia – Joint Secretary
  • A. Raghuram Bhat – Treasurer

In addition, Jaydev Niranjan Shah was elected as the sole Member of the Apex Council, while Arun Singh Dhumal and M. Khairul Jamal Majumdar were inducted into the Governing Council. Collectively, the new team is tasked with strengthening cricket’s administrative framework, ensuring financial transparency, and advancing grassroots and elite-level development.

Who is Mithun Manhas?

Born on October 12, 1979, in Jammu and Kashmir, Mithun Manhas is remembered as one of the most prolific players in Indian domestic cricket. A right-handed batsman and occasional off-spinner, Manhas often captained Delhi, especially during periods when senior players were on national duty. He played a key role in nurturing young talents, including Virat Kohli, during their formative years.

In an 18-year first-class career, Manhas played 157 matches, scoring 9,714 runs at an average of nearly 46, including 27 centuries and 49 fifties. His standout season came in 2007-08, when he led Delhi to a Ranji Trophy victory after years of drought, scoring 921 runs that season at an average of 57.56.

IPL Stints

Manhas also featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL), representing:

  • Delhi Daredevils (2008–2010)
  • Pune Warriors (2011–2013)
  • Chennai Super Kings (2014)

While he never broke into the Indian national team, Manhas carved out a respected reputation as a dependable leader and consistent run-getter in the domestic circuit.

As BCCI president, Manhas is expected to bring the same grit and pragmatism that defined his playing career to cricket administration, with a focus on balancing innovation and tradition in the world’s most powerful cricket board.
