Mumbai: A 50-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly pushing an 18-year-old college student from a moving local train on the Panvel–CSMT route, an incident that occurred on Thursday, December 18. The accused has been identified as Shaikh Akhtar Nawaz, who reportedly appeared to be mentally disturbed, according to a report by The Times of India.

The victim, Shweta Mahadik, was travelling with her friend to their college in Kharghar when the incident took place. The two had boarded the ladies’ coach of the 7:59 am Panvel–CSMT local train from Panvel. The accused allegedly entered the ladies’ coach, prompting objections from women passengers, who asked him to alight.

Despite repeated requests, the man reportedly refused to leave, leading to a verbal altercation inside the coach. The situation escalated when the accused allegedly turned violent and pushed Shweta, who was standing near the footboard of the coach. She fell from the moving train onto the railway tracks, approximately 1.5 km from Panvel station.

Following the incident, women commuters immediately alerted the railway helpline. The Government Railway Police (GRP) detained the accused at Khandeshwar police station. A search operation was launched to locate the victim; however, she was not found at the spot. It was later discovered that local residents had rushed her to a nearby hospital.

Speaking to TOI, Inspector Vijay Tayade confirmed that Shweta’s condition is stable and that she miraculously escaped without any major injuries.

An FIR has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempted murder, and the accused has been formally arrested. He was taken to JJ Hospital for a medical examination, where doctors reportedly stated that he appeared to be mentally disturbed. During questioning, the accused claimed to be homeless and said he lived in the Khar–Bandra road area.

Shaikh Akhtar Nawaz was produced before a Panvel court on December 19, which remanded him to police custody for three days. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
