Man Arrested for Alleged Desecration at Hyderabad Temple, Incident Triggers Protests and Political Row

Hyderabad: A 26-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly entering the Katta Maisamma Temple premises in Hyderabad and defecating near the idol, an act that triggered local protests and sparked sharp political reactions on Sunday.

According to police, the incident took place late Saturday night when the accused allegedly desecrated the Bodrai, a sacred stone worshipped by devotees, within the temple complex. Local residents reportedly confronted the man at the spot, following which a crowd gathered. A video circulating on social media purportedly shows the accused being questioned and assaulted by a group before police intervention.

Police Action and Legal Proceedings

Police personnel arrived at the scene to control the situation and took the accused into custody to prevent further escalation. The man has been identified as Altaf, a resident of Bidar district in neighbouring Karnataka.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for unlawful entry into a place of worship and for allegedly insulting religious sentiments. Police officials said the accused was produced before a city court on Sunday and has been remanded to judicial custody.

Authorities added that the accused’s antecedents and past history are being verified and that further legal action will be taken strictly as per law.

Protests and Political Reactions

The incident led to protests by BJP leaders, pro-Hindu organisations, and temple devotees, who alleged that the accused also urinated within the temple premises. Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao visited the temple and described the act as “blasphemous.”

In a post on social media platform X, Rao criticised the ruling Congress government in Telangana, accusing it of failing to protect Hindu religious sites. He also alleged selective silence by political parties and sections of the media, stating that the BJP would continue to protest to safeguard Hindu faith and temples.

Rao’s remarks drew attention for their strong language, further intensifying the political debate surrounding the incident.

Police Appeal for Calm

Meanwhile, Hyderabad police appealed to the public to maintain peace and refrain from circulating unverified videos or rumours on social media. Officials urged citizens to rely only on official updates, warning that misinformation could disturb public order and communal harmony.

“Spreading rumours or provocative content may lead to legal action,” police said, adding that the situation is under control and the investigation is ongoing.

Situation Under Watch

Authorities have increased vigilance in the area to prevent any further unrest. Police said they are closely monitoring developments and will take necessary steps to ensure law and order is maintained.
