Maharashtra Local Body Elections 2025: Mahayuti Scores Big Win, BJP Emerges as Dominant Force

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Local Body Elections 2025 have sent a strong political signal ahead of key civic polls, with the Mahayuti alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registering a sweeping victory across the state. The ruling alliance won 218 out of 288 contested seats, dealing a major setback to the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
BJP Leads Mahayuti’s Dominant Performance
The BJP emerged as the single largest party, securing 127 seats, cementing its position as the decisive force within the Mahayuti alliance. Alliance partners Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) and Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) won 54 and 37 seats, respectively.
The results indicate Mahayuti’s strong grip over urban and semi-urban local bodies, strengthening its momentum ahead of the next round of crucial municipal elections.
MVA Suffers Major Setback
The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi managed to win only 47 seats, reflecting a sharp decline in its influence at the grassroots level. Within the alliance:
- Congress secured 31 seats
- Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) won 9 seats
- NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) managed just 7 seats
Political analysts see the outcome as a warning sign for the MVA as it struggles to regain lost ground.
Key Indicator Ahead of BMC and Civic Polls
The local body results are widely being viewed as a semi-final before the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and 28 other municipal corporation elections, scheduled for January 15–16, 2026. The upcoming elections will cover 2,869 seats, with an electorate of nearly 3.48 crore voters, making them a critical political test.
Strong Performances Across Districts
In individual municipal councils, BJP candidates recorded victories in Tuljapur, Naldurg, Murum and Phaltan, showcasing the party’s growing footprint in regional councils. The Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) retained control in Umarga, Kalamb and Paranda.
Meanwhile, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP posted significant wins in Daund and Baramati, with Jai Patil securing his fourth consecutive term in the Baramati Municipal Council. Local alliances also made their presence felt, particularly in Bhum Municipal Council, highlighting the continued relevance of regional political groupings.
Political Networks Play Key Role
Family connections of senior political leaders influenced outcomes in several councils. BJP candidates related to MLAs and ministers led in early trends in Akkalkot, Dhamangaon, Murtizapur, Shirpur and Pusad, underlining the importance of political networks and organisational strength in local body elections.
Political Momentum Shifts Toward Mahayuti
With a decisive majority and strong grassroots support, the Mahayuti alliance appears well-positioned as Maharashtra heads toward high-stakes municipal elections in 2026. For the MVA, the results underscore the urgency to regroup, strengthen coordination, and reconnect with voters at the local level.
