Maha Govt To Probe Farmers’ Protest Tweets Of Sachin, Akshay, Kohli, Other Celebrities

Mumbai: Maharashtra government has said it will investigate tweets in response to global criticism of Centre’s handling of the farmers’ protest, posted by celebrities including Sachin Tendulkar, Lata Mangeshkar and Virat Kohli.

Anil Deshmukh and his Congress colleague Sachin Sawant have alleged that in response to international pop icon Rihanna’s tweet, celebrities who addressed the peasant movement under pressure from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are doing so.

He said, “On 26 January, the scene suddenly changed. Attempts were made to discredit the farmers’ movement. Farmers were making peaceful agitations and now things are slowly coming to light on how a plot to discredit them Was being created.”

“Are these tweets posted under some pressure?” Were they forced to do the same? Our intelligence agencies will look into it. How are the tweets of Akshay Kumar and Saina Nehwal similar? This will be considered. Sunil Shetty’s tweet, which has tagged a BJP leader, is also with us. And, the matter will now be investigated,” said Anil Deshmukh.

Mumbai Congress leader Sachin Sawant alleged that many famous Bollywood celebrities, including Indian cricketers, who were tweeting similar messages on the farmers’ movement, are doing so under pressure from the BJP.

Sachin Sawant said that the BJP has created a dangerous situation in recent times. In the context of the peasant movement, the Congress leader said that BJP has acted in a totally undemocratic manner which has worried everyone.

Referring to a recent tweet by international star Rihanna commenting on the farm, referring to the movement, Sachin Sawant alleged that to save his image, the BJP started a tweet drive-by pressurizing several prominent personalities.

Sachin Sawant said that the BJP had given a script to emulate all these people.

“Akshay Kumar and Saina Nehwal tweeted the same and we doubt that BJP is behind this. A BJP leader was also tagged by Sunil Shetty and it exposed the role of the BJP completely. Sachin Sawant said that the party also has a role in the BCCI and so perhaps some cricketers have also tweeted.

Sachin Sawant further said that if these personalities are under pressure, then they need to be protected by the state.

There was a time when the underworld pressured Bollywood celebrities, adding Sachin Sawant, “but now, the meanings of such pressure have completely changed in the present moment. It seems that there is pressure on the players from the BCCI. There is pressure on Bollywood as well and this needs to be investigated as well.”

“Orders need to be given for investigation. And, it needs to be found out who is putting pressure on the personalities,” Sachin Sawant said.

The celebrities reacted after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement wherein it stated that notable personalities should refrain from reacting on this issue and rather get “proper understanding of the issues”.
