M. K. Stalin Slams LPG Price Hike, Demands Rollback; Accuses Centre of ‘Post-Poll Burden’

Mumbai: M. K. Stalin on Friday strongly criticised the Centre over the sharp increase in commercial LPG cylinder prices, urging an immediate rollback of the hike.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s reaction came after the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder was raised by ₹993 on May 1 the steepest-ever increase marking the third consecutive monthly hike. The surge has been attributed to rising global energy costs linked to the ongoing tensions in West Asia. Also Read: Big Jump in Commercial LPG Rates: 19-kg Cylinder Now ₹3,071.5 in Delhi

Taking to social media platform X, the DMK chief alleged that the BJP-led Union government implemented the hike immediately after elections concluded, despite earlier warnings from opposition leaders.

“As predicted before the polls, LPG prices have been increased right after elections. When global crude oil prices fell, the benefits were not passed on to the people,” Stalin said.

He further accused the Centre of using the West Asia conflict as a justification to raise prices, alleging that the move disregards public welfare. According to him, the burden of rising fuel costs continues to fall on businesses and consumers alike.

The latest hike is expected to significantly impact commercial establishments such as restaurants and small businesses, which rely heavily on LPG for daily operations, potentially leading to increased costs for consumers.
