Israel Launches Airstrikes on Western Iran Following Missile Attacks on Civilian Areas

Mumbai: In a major escalation of tensions, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) launched a fresh wave of airstrikes early Sunday targeting military infrastructure in western Iran. The strikes came shortly after Iranian ballistic missiles struck multiple locations in Israel, injuring at least 16 civilians.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the retaliatory strikes in an official statement, saying: “The IAF has begun a series of strikes toward military targets in western Iran. Additionally, this morning, the IAF struck missile launchers ready to launch toward Israeli territory, soldiers in the Iranian Armed Forces, and swiftly neutralised the launchers that launched missiles toward Israeli territory a short while ago.”

According to reports from Israel’s state news agency TPS and the Times of Israel, the missile impacts from Iran were reported across several cities including Tel Aviv, Haifa, and central Israel. Air raid sirens were heard in northern regions, prompting residents to take shelter. In Haifa, one missile landed without any siren warning.

Israel’s national emergency service, Magen David Adom (MDA), revised the casualty toll from the Iranian missile attacks to 16. The injured included a man in his 30s, moderately wounded by shrapnel, and 15 others who sustained minor injuries.

Oren Marmorstein, spokesperson for Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, condemned the Iranian strikes, stating, “The Iranian regime is firing ballistic missiles at civilian population centres in Israel.”

In parallel operations during the intervening hours of Saturday and Sunday, the United States and Israel jointly carried out precision strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. These sites are considered critical to Iran’s uranium enrichment programme, with Fordow being the main centre for enrichment up to 60%.

According to CNN, six U.S. B-2 bombers were likely deployed to drop a dozen GBU-57 A/B “bunker buster” bombs—known as Massive Ordnance Penetrators—on the deeply buried Fordow nuclear facility. A U.S. official confirmed a full payload had been dropped on the site.

In his first public statement after the coordinated strikes, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Iran, saying: “There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran, far greater than we’ve witnessed over the last eight days.”

The military and diplomatic fallout from this latest escalation is being closely monitored by global powers, amid growing concerns of a broader regional conflict.
