Iran Assures India of Safe Passage for Evacuation of Citizens Amid Escalating Conflict with Israel

Mumbai: Amid rising tensions and escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, Tehran has responded positively to India’s request for assistance in evacuating its citizens, particularly students stranded in Iranian cities. While Iranian airspace remains closed due to ongoing military operations, authorities have assured New Delhi that all land borders are open and available for safe passage.

In an official statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed it is working in coordination with India’s diplomatic mission to enable the evacuation of both Indian diplomats and civilians. “Given the current condition and the closure of the country’s airports, as well as the request of many political missions to transfer their diplomats and nationals abroad, we inform that all land borders are open for crossing,” NDTV reported, citing Iranian officials.

Tehran has asked Indian authorities to furnish comprehensive details of the evacuees — including names, passport numbers, vehicle details, intended travel schedules, and selected border crossings — to its General Protocol Department to ensure a secure and coordinated evacuation process.

Over 1,500 Indian nationals, a significant number of them students from Jammu and Kashmir, are currently stranded in Iranian cities such as Tehran, Qom, and Shiraz. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that it is actively working to ensure the safety of all Indian nationals in Iran. Some students have already been moved to safer locations within the country.

“The Embassy of India in Tehran is continuously monitoring the security situation and engaging with Indian students in Iran. Other feasible evacuation options are also under examination,” the MEA said in an official statement.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran has also issued an advisory urging Indian citizens to stay calm, avoid unnecessary movement, and rely only on official sources for updates. Emergency helpline numbers have been circulated along with a Telegram link for real-time communication and alerts.

The situation remains tense in the region, with airstrikes and retaliatory military action disrupting normal operations. However, diplomatic efforts between New Delhi and Tehran signal a promising path forward for the safe repatriation of Indian citizens from the conflict zone.
