India’s Global Importance Set to Rise, Says Ian Bremmer; Trump Praises PM Modi at G7 Summit
Mumbai: Eurasia Group founder Ian Bremmer has said that India’s significance on the global stage is set to grow substantially over the next two years, underscoring the country’s increasing influence in international affairs.
Speaking to CNN-News18 on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, Bremmer highlighted India’s role as a key middle power in an evolving geopolitical landscape. His remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged India’s strategic importance and expressed strong support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Any future US president after Trump will focus on burden-sharing. Over the next two years, we’ll all realise how important India is, as Mark Carney has also noted. Middle powers are not going anywhere,” Bremmer said.
Trump Signals Strong Support for India
During a joint interaction with reporters alongside Prime Minister Modi, President Trump emphasized the strength of US-India relations and indicated that Washington would stand by India in the event of any external threat.
“I think it is a great relationship. If they were attacked, we would be there to help them. If anybody attacks that man, we are going to be there. If they are attacked and he is the leader, we are going to be there to help,” Trump said, referring to Prime Minister Modi.
The remarks reflected the growing strategic partnership between the two countries amid shifting global power dynamics and increasing focus on the Indo-Pacific region.
India-Canada Ties Also Gain Momentum
Bremmer’s reference to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney comes at a time when India and Canada are seeking to strengthen bilateral relations. In a recent joint statement, both countries reaffirmed their shared objective of concluding negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in 2026.
Prime Minister Modi and his Canadian counterpart expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the negotiations, signaling a renewed push to deepen economic engagement between the two nations.
Trump Calls Modi a ‘Tough Negotiator’
Trump also lavished praise on Prime Minister Modi’s negotiating skills, describing him as one of the toughest leaders he has dealt with.
“You look at this man. I’ll give you a lesson. He’s the most beautiful-looking man. He looks so nice, like an angel. But actually, he’s as tough as he is a killer,” Trump remarked in a light-hearted tone.
He further added, “He gets you by surprise. People say he’s such a nice man. I say he’s very tough. He’s a tough trader, and he loves the Indian people, but he also loves the USA.”
India’s Rising Global Profile
The comments from both Trump and Bremmer come amid growing international recognition of India’s economic strength, diplomatic influence and strategic importance. As global powers increasingly look toward partnerships beyond traditional alliances, India is emerging as a critical player in shaping the future international order.
