India Summons Iranian Ambassador After Iran Attacks Indian Ships in Strait of Hormuz

Mumbai: India has lodged a strong diplomatic protest with Iran following firing incidents involving Indian-flagged vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.

In response to the incident, the Iranian Ambassador in New Delhi was summoned for a meeting with the Foreign Secretary. During the discussion, India conveyed its serious concerns over the reported firing involving two Indian-flagged merchant vessels earlier in the day.

The Foreign Secretary emphasized the importance India places on the safety and security of its merchant ships and seafarers. He also recalled previous instances where Iran had assisted in ensuring safe passage for India-bound vessels and urged Tehran to take immediate steps to restore secure navigation through the strait.

The Iranian envoy assured Indian officials that the concerns raised would be communicated to authorities in Tehran.

Incident Raises Alarm Over Maritime Safety

According to reports, Indian-flagged vessels were caught in firing incidents while transiting the strategic waterway. Government sources confirmed that India intends to formally convey its “serious concern and displeasure” and seek clarification on the circumstances under which civilian ships came under fire.

Questions have also been raised regarding the authority responsible for the action taken against commercial vessels navigating an international maritime route.

Vessels Forced to Change Course

Officials indicated that at least two Indian-linked ships were caught near a diversion point close to Larak Island and were forced to turn back. Another vessel managed to complete its passage earlier in the day.

Multiple India-flagged or India-bound vessels attempted to pass through the strait since morning, but several had to retreat due to rising tensions in the region.

No injuries or damage to the ships or crew have been reported so far.

India Monitoring Seafarer Safety

The Directorate General of Shipping is closely monitoring the evolving situation and coordinating with relevant agencies to ensure the safety of Indian seafarers and vessels operating in the region.

India has reiterated that the protection of its maritime trade and personnel remains a top priority.

Rising Tensions in a Strategic Waterway

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, which handles nearly one-fifth of global oil shipments. Increased military activity and movement restrictions in recent days have raised concerns over the safety of commercial shipping and the risk of further escalation in the region.
