Himanta Biswa Sarma Slams Rahul Gandhi, Calls Him ‘Pappu’ Ahead of Assam Polls

Mumbai: As the political temperature rises ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday targeted Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Gaurav Gogoi, branding them “Pappu” and “chhota Pappu” respectively.
Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s recent threat of arrest if Congress comes to power in Assam, Sarma dismissed the claim with a scathing remark, stating that even former leaders Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Rahul himself would have to be reborn multiple times to take action against him.
Speaking at Sribhumi, Sarma said, “Those who say they will arrest Himanta Biswa Sarma, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi would have to be reborn for that. It will not happen in this lifetime. Only after several lifetimes would they be able to do anything to Himanta Biswa Sarma.”
The remarks follow Rahul Gandhi’s attack on Thursday, when he called Sarma the “most corrupt CM” in India, alleging that he, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, were operating a “land ATM” in the state. Gandhi claimed that Sarma ran Assam through syndicates and was fully controlled by the Prime Minister due to corruption.
“India’s most corrupt CM is Himanta Biswa Sarma, and his family is also No. 1 in corruption. The Congress government will take action against him. Though he is boasting now, he will be completely silent after that,” Gandhi asserted, emphasizing that legal accountability is inevitable.
Sarma’s fiery response underscores the growing intensity of political rhetoric as Assam heads toward its assembly elections, with both sides trading sharp personal and political barbs.
The polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam will be held in a single phase on April 9, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
Assam will witness a fight between the incumbent BJP-led NDA government and Congress for the 126-seat assembly.
