Government Clears ₹40,000 Crore Defence Procurement Amid Operation Sindoor

New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster India’s defence capabilities, the Indian government has approved a massive ₹40,000 crore deal for the emergency procurement of critical arms and ammunition. This decision comes as the Indian defence forces continue their ongoing Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, recently granted approval for these acquisitions under emergency powers, allowing the forces to quickly secure the equipment needed to tackle emerging security challenges. This is the fifth tranche of emergency procurement powers given to the defence forces in the last five years.

Key Acquisitions Under the New Deal

The approved package includes a wide range of cutting-edge military hardware, such as:

  • Surveillance drones and kamikaze drones
  • Long-range loitering munitions
  • Ammunition for artillery and air defence
  • Missiles and rockets, including the BrahMos and Scalp cruise missiles

Notably, the Indian Army and Indian Air Force (IAF) have already benefited from these emergency powers, acquiring Heron Mark 2 drones that have played a critical role in monitoring live operations during Operation Sindoor. The IAF and Indian Navy also used the Rampage missile for precision strikes on targets in Pakistan as part of the ongoing military campaign.

Faster Procurement, Stronger Forces

Under these emergency powers, the forces must finalize contracts within 40 days, with a 15% cap on the overall defence budget. Deliveries are expected within a year, ensuring the forces receive the equipment they need without delay. Vice Chiefs of the three forces will oversee the procurement process, with the support of financial advisors from the defence finance wing.

Focus on Indigenous Manufacturing

In line with the government’s push for self-reliance, the Defence Ministry is also working on long-term modernization projects, with senior officials meeting industry leaders to discuss partnerships and collaborations. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and private firms like Solar Defence and Aerospace are expected to secure significant orders for drone detection radars and other critical technologies.

The government’s focus on indigenization is aimed at reducing dependence on imports and boosting the domestic defence industry, which has been facing several challenges in recent years.

Impact on Operation Sindoor

The approval of this deal is seen as a significant boost for the Indian armed forces, which have already dealt a severe blow to the Pakistan Air Force during Operation Sindoor, reportedly hitting 11 out of 12 air bases and causing extensive damage to enemy infrastructure.

Experts believe this latest round of emergency procurement will further enhance the forces’ ability to respond to evolving security challenges, ensuring India remains prepared for any future conflicts.

With this move, the Indian government has sent a clear message about its commitment to maintaining a strong, modernized, and well-equipped military, capable of defending the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
