Dia Mirza Reveals Bollywood Men Told Her to ‘Inject Your Lips’ and ‘Enhance Your Breasts’: ‘I Felt Inadequate’

The actress opens up about beauty standards, cosmetic surgery pressure and ageism in Bollywood, saying the comments always came from men

Mumbai: Actor Dia Mirza has spoken candidly about the beauty standards she encountered in Bollywood, revealing that she was repeatedly advised to undergo cosmetic enhancements early in her career. The actress said she was told to “inject your lips” and “enhance your breasts,” adding that such comments always came from men in the film industry and left her feeling inadequate despite her success.

In a recent conversation with SheThePeople, Dia reflected on the growing pressure surrounding cosmetic procedures, ageing and unrealistic beauty expectations, while urging women to embrace their natural appearance.

Dia Mirza Opens Up About Beauty Pressure in Bollywood

Sharing her views on cosmetic surgery and the entertainment industry, Dia Mirza said she believes the pressure to alter one’s appearance is largely driven by unrealistic standards created by men.

She expressed concern over the increasing number of women opting for cosmetic procedures, saying the industry often operates by making women feel they are “not good enough” or “not young enough.”

According to the actress, external appearance has become more important than self-acceptance and emotional well-being.

“If a woman rejects her natural features and wants to enhance them through cosmetic surgery, it’s because some man somewhere has told her she is not good enough or not young enough,” Dia said.

‘Go Inject Your Lips, Enhance Your Breasts’

When asked whether she had personally experienced ageism or appearance-based criticism, Dia revealed that she had often been told to change the way she looked.

She said the suggestions always came from men in the industry and never from women.

“I’ve also been told how I should change and what I can do to enhance the way I look. It’s always been men. I’ve never had a woman tell me, ‘Go inject your lips. Your lips are too thin,’ or ‘Enhance your breasts. They’re too small.’ It’s always a man who tells you that,” she said.

‘I Felt Inadequate Despite Winning Beauty Titles’

Dia Mirza admitted that the comments affected her confidence, especially because they came at a time when she had already achieved national recognition by winning beauty pageants.

She recalled that she was still in her teens when she began hearing such remarks from filmmakers and industry professionals.

“Yes, I felt inadequate. This was after I had won two beauty titles. I was young—I wasn’t even 20 yet. Sometimes it was a director, sometimes a producer, sometimes someone who considered themselves an expert. But I don’t remember a woman ever telling me these things,” she shared.

Dia Mirza Speaks Against Unrealistic Beauty Standards

The actress said society today places excessive importance on physical appearance while paying little attention to self-awareness and mental well-being.

She warned that many women are being encouraged to seek cosmetic procedures out of fear rather than personal choice, adding that such changes often fail to provide the confidence or happiness they are expected to bring.

Dia Mirza’s remarks have reignited conversations around beauty standards, body image, cosmetic surgery and gender bias in Bollywood, with many praising the actress for speaking openly about an issue that continues to affect women across the entertainment industry.
