Devendra Fadnavis Calls Mumbai-Pune ‘Missing Link’ an Economic Game-Changer, Says It Will Boost Economy by ₹70,000 Crore

Mumbai: Devendra Fadnavis on Friday inaugurated the ambitious ₹7,181 crore Mumbai-Pune ‘Missing Link’ project, describing it as an “engineering marvel” that will serve as a major economic multiplier for Maharashtra.
Highlighting the project’s significance, the Chief Minister said it is expected to generate an economic impact of nearly ₹70,000 crore. “The proposed Mumbai-Pune technology and quantum corridor will now get a boost with this Missing Link. It will significantly improve connectivity and strengthen the region’s economic ecosystem,” Fadnavis said.
He also suggested that the project be renamed the “Connecting Link,” noting its transformative impact on travel between the two cities. The new stretch is set to reduce the distance by 6 km and cut travel time by around 30 minutes, while easing congestion on one of the state’s busiest corridors.
Fadnavis further underlined the engineering excellence behind the project, revealing that it features the tallest cable-stayed bridge in India, designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 240 kmph. The project has been developed in collaboration with firms from seven countries, including Taiwan, Singapore, Austria, Spain, Canada, Malaysia, and Denmark.
Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar were also present at the inauguration ceremony, where the foundation plaque was unveiled.
The project has been opened for commuters in phases. Under Phase I (May 1 to October 31, 2026), only light motor vehicles (LMVs) and passenger buses will be allowed on the stretch, with heavy goods vehicles restricted.
In Phase II, starting November 1, 2026, LMVs and passenger vehicles will continue to operate, while a decision on allowing goods vehicles will be taken after assessing traffic conditions over the previous six months.
The Missing Link project is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Pune while reducing travel time and congestion, marking a key milestone in Maharashtra’s infrastructure development.
