Congress Slams US Ceasefire Announcement as Attempt to Internationalize Kashmir Issue

Mumbai: The Congress party on Sunday criticized US President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a “ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, calling it an attempt to internationalize the Kashmir issue. The statement comes amid heightened tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent Indian military strikes under Operation Sindoor.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, senior party leader Sachin Pilot highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting that the rapid chain of events over the past 24 hours had raised significant concerns. “The Indian armed forces have again shown that they are second to none… We were surprised by the fact that US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire, which has happened for the first time,” Pilot said. He added, “What was written in that social media post is noteworthy. This is an attempt to internationalize the Kashmir issue. The Congress party has been demanding for a long time that a special Parliament session be called, and we should repeat the resolution of 1994 when all parties unanimously agreed that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is an integral part of India, and we will take it back.”
Pilot also drew historical parallels, recalling the 1971 war and the resolve shown by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the face of American pressure. “In the 1971 war, America said that it was deploying the 7th Fleet in the Bay of Bengal, but despite that, our leader, Indira Gandhi, did what was in the supreme national interest. Today, we remember her as a leader for whom national interest was supreme,” he said.
He further noted that even during the Parliament attack, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi was the Leader of the Opposition, the Congress party had firmly supported the government in its stand against terrorism. “This time as well, the opposition supported the government, but the way the ceasefire was announced by the US was an attempt to internationalize a bilateral issue,” Pilot asserted.
Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force (IAF) confirmed through its official ‘X’ handle that the tasks assigned to it in Operation Sindoor had been successfully completed with “precision” and “professionalism.” However, they emphasized that the operations are still ongoing and not yet fully concluded. “The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully executed its assigned tasks in Operation Sindoor, with precision and professionalism. Operations were conducted in a deliberate and discreet manner, aligned with National Objectives. Since the operations are still ongoing, a detailed briefing will be conducted in due course. The IAF urges all to refrain from speculation and dissemination of unverified information,” read the IAF’s official post.
As the geopolitical situation continues to evolve, the Congress party has reiterated its call for a special parliamentary session to reaffirm India’s stance on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and address the broader security challenges facing the nation.
