Chhattisgarh to Table Uniform Civil Code Bill in Winter Session, Says Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai
Mumbai: The Chhattisgarh government plans to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill during the upcoming winter session of the state Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced on Friday. Speaking to reporters in Raipur prior to his departure for Bengaluru, Sai reiterated his administration’s commitment to implementing the legislation across the state.
The announcement coincided with the inaugural meeting of the state’s newly formed five-member UCC panel at the Mantralaya Mahanadi Bhavan in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar. The committee, led by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, was established last month to examine existing personal laws and formulate recommendations regarding marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, and adoption. The panel includes retired civil servants Shatrughan Singh and M K Raut, senior advocate Mohan Pawar, and former principal Jyoti Rani Singh.
Over the coming months, the committee will consult citizens, legal experts, and social organizations, as well as examine similar UCC frameworks adopted by other states, before submitting a final draft bill and administrative suggestions to the government.
Chief Minister Sai also addressed an ongoing demonstration in the state capital, where Congress party members gathered outside a police station demanding legal action against ruling party members following alleged stone-pelting during a political rally. While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful demonstration, Sai criticized the opposition, attributing the agitation to electoral frustration and calling for protests to remain strictly within democratic limits.
Before traveling to attend religious celebrations at Sathya Sai Grama near Bengaluru, the Chief Minister highlighted the philanthropic contributions of local healthcare institutions, noting that the Sri Sathya Sai Trust-run hospital in Raipur continues to deliver free specialized cardiac care to children across the region.
