Bihar Approves Sindhu Darshan Yatra Subsidy Scheme, Pilgrims to Get Up to Rs 20,000 Assistance

Patna: The Bihar government has approved the Sindhu Darshan Teerth Yatra Financial Assistance Scheme 2026, a new initiative aimed at supporting residents undertaking the pilgrimage to the sacred Sindhu (Indus) River in Ladakh. The decision was taken during a state Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.

Under the scheme, eligible pilgrims will receive financial assistance from the state government to help cover travel expenses associated with the Sindhu Darshan Yatra. The government will reimburse 50 per cent of the travel cost or a maximum of Rs 20,000 per person, whichever is lower.

The initiative is intended to make the pilgrimage more accessible and affordable, enabling more people to visit the historic river, which is regarded as a symbol of India’s cultural heritage, civilisation and spiritual legacy.

Eligibility Criteria

The Bihar government has specified that only permanent residents of Bihar who are 18 years of age or older will be eligible to avail the benefit. Children and teenagers below the age of 18 will not qualify for financial assistance under the scheme.

To ensure effective implementation, the government has also limited the number of beneficiaries to 100 pilgrims annually. As a result, the subsidy will be available only to a select number of eligible applicants each year.

Reimbursement After Completion of Yatra

The financial assistance will be provided only after pilgrims complete the Sindhu Darshan Yatra. Beneficiaries will be required to submit applications along with the necessary documents as per the prescribed procedure to claim reimbursement.

The Bihar Tourism Department is expected to issue detailed guidelines shortly, outlining the application process, documentation requirements and other terms and conditions related to the scheme.

Preserving Cultural Heritage

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, the Bihar government stated that the Sindhu River is not merely a water body but a powerful symbol of India’s rich cultural identity, historical continuity and civilisational heritage.

Through the Sindhu Darshan Teerth Yatra Financial Assistance Scheme 2026, the state aims to encourage greater participation in the pilgrimage and provide residents with an opportunity to experience the spiritual and cultural importance of the sacred river in Ladakh.

The scheme is expected to benefit devotees and cultural enthusiasts alike, while reinforcing awareness of India’s ancient heritage and traditions.
