BCCI to Seek ICC Action Against Naqvi Over Asia Cup Trophy Controversy

Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to take firm action against Mohsin Naqvi, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman, following his controversial conduct during and after the recently concluded Asia Cup 2025.

According to reports from PTI, the Indian cricket board will raise Naqvi’s behaviour at the International Cricket Council (ICC) level, with discussions already underway to seek his censure or possible removal from the ICC’s governing structure.

BCCI Slams Naqvi Over Asia Cup Trophy Incident

The controversy erupted after Naqvi allegedly refused to hand over the Asia Cup trophy to the BCCI — the official hosts of the tournament — and insisted on personally presenting it to the Indian team.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia condemned the move, asserting that the Asia Cup title “is not Naqvi’s personal property” and must be returned to India immediately.

“It remains to be seen what will be the long-term ramifications for the PCB or Naqvi, because the BCCI is clear he didn’t have any right to insist on handing the trophy himself to the Indian team and refusing to send it to the BCCI,” a BCCI source told PTI.

The post-match presentation ceremony on September 28 was delayed by nearly an hour as neither India nor Naqvi backed down. Eventually, the presentation was called off midway — a rare and embarrassing scene in international cricket.

India-Pakistan Rivalry Intensifies After Asia Cup 2025

This year’s Asia Cup — the first major cricket event between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor — was already marked by heightened tensions.

The first flashpoint came on September 14, when Suryakumar Yadav’s Indian team reportedly refused to shake hands with Pakistan players. Heated exchanges later followed in the Super 4s stage, including a verbal spat between Haris Rauf, Abhishek Sharma, and Shubman Gill.

The controversy surrounding the Asia Cup trophy only added to the political undertones of the tournament.

Naqvi’s Political Statements Add Fuel to Fire

Beyond the trophy dispute, Naqvi has drawn criticism for using his social media handles to make politically charged remarks against India — a move BCCI officials believe violates the neutral role of an ACC chairperson.

Sources revealed that during a subsequent ACC meeting, tensions flared between Naqvi and BCCI representatives Rajeev Shukla and Ashish Shelar. Initially, Naqvi refused to congratulate India on their Asia Cup triumph, doing so only after Shelar’s insistence.

When the issue of the trophy was raised, Naqvi reportedly deflected responsibility, claiming that if India wanted the trophy, captain Suryakumar Yadav should travel to Dubai to collect it personally — a statement that further angered Indian officials.

According to established protocols, the Asia Cup trophy should have already been delivered to the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.
