Aurangabad Railway Station Officially Renamed as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Station

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has officially renamed Aurangabad railway station to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar railway station, marking the completion of a long-standing demand and political process. The decision was formalized through a gazette notification issued by the state government on October 15, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The move comes nearly three years after the Eknath Shinde-led government formally changed the name of Aurangabad city to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The city, which was originally named after Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, was renamed as a tribute to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of the legendary Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The original proposal to rename the city was first initiated by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in 2022. However, the process gained momentum and reached completion under the current BJP-led Mahayuti government.

According to the gazette notification, all official records, signboards, and documentation will now reflect the new name — Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar railway station.

The renaming holds deep cultural and historical significance for Maharashtra, aligning with ongoing efforts to honor Maratha heritage and legacy across the state.
