Mumbai: US President Donald Trump on Saturday issued a sharp ultimatum to Iran, giving Tehran 48 hours to strike a deal or reopen the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, warning of severe consequences otherwise.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump reiterated his earlier warning and said time was running out. “Remember when I gave Iran ten days to make a deal or open up the Hormuz Strait. Time is running out 48 hours before all hell will rain down on them,” he wrote.
The latest statement follows Trump’s earlier 10-day deadline issued last month, urging Iran to either move forward with negotiations or allow free passage through the vital shipping corridor.
On March 26, Trump had announced a temporary pause on potential strikes targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure, extending it by 10 days until April 6, 2026. He claimed the decision was taken at the request of the Iranian government and said diplomatic talks were progressing positively.
“As per Iranian Government request… I am pausing the period of energy plant destruction by 10 days… Talks are ongoing and… going very well,” Trump had stated in a previous post, dismissing contrary reports as misleading.
The pause itself followed an earlier decision by the US administration to delay military action against Iranian energy facilities for five days, citing ongoing diplomatic engagement amid rising tensions in West Asia.
However, Trump’s renewed 48-hour ultimatum signals a hardening stance, as the US continues to press Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz a critical global energy route that handles a significant portion of the world’s oil supply.
The escalating rhetoric underscores the fragile nature of ongoing negotiations and raises concerns about potential military escalation if a breakthrough is not reached within the given timeframe.
