Action Against 58K People Without Mask In Mumbai, ₹1.16 cr Fine Collected

Mumbai: Amid rising COVID-19 cases in Mumbai, the police took action against 58,000 people who were found without a mask in public places in the last 13 days.

So far, the police have collected a fine of Rs 1.16 crore in a bid to intensify the crackdown on people not wearing masks.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh has directed the city’s police force to collect fines from at least 1,000 people per day in each area who are not found wearing masks.

Mumbai is divided into 12 police zones and city police has been empowered for those who are found not wearing masks as per COVID-19 norms.

To include the spread of COVID-19 in the metropolis, Mumbai’s top police has asked the city’s police force to take stern action against those who do not wear masks in public places.

PTI quoted city police spokesperson S Chaitanya as saying, “The idea behind setting a target of 1,000 cases per day for each region is guidelines issued by the government to wearing a mask and maintaining physical distance in public places.”

He further said that the Mumbai Police is making efforts to spread awareness among the citizens about the inclusion of the spread of COVID-19.

The official said that half of the money recovered from the violators of the masked regime will be used for police welfare activities and the rest will be given to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

On Tuesday, Maharashtra’s capital reported 849 new cases of COVID-19, pushing the tally to 3,27,619. So far, 11,476 people have lost their lives due to the disease in the city, as per official figures.
